The 1870 Census shows Mark Heggins was born in Florida and Jennie Gefferson Heggins was born in Alabama.
Earliest records show Mark and Jennie Heggins staked claim on vacant public land in Leon County as early as 1867. On October 5, 1871, Mark Heggins submitted an application to claim this land as their homestead under the Act to regulate the Disposal of Public Lands of the State of Texas approved August 12, 1870. Mark and Jennie Heggins land patent was approved and granted on April 5, 1876. This land patent was signed by the State of Texas Governor Richard Coke and Texas General Land Commissioner Johnathan J. Groos.
